Simon Edwards is a Canterbury based painter who paints mainly landscape and sky studies. At 31 years of age his paintings are in great demand and his exhibitions are invariably sold out. His painting elicits highly favourable response from both general public and art cognoscenti. In 2005 he won the “People’s Choice Award” in the prestigious Anthony Harper Art Prize. His work is represented in private and public collections both in New Zealand and internationally.

Simon’s childhood was spent in the countryside of the Canterbury Plains of the South Island, New Zealand - this is where his inspiration comes from for the calmly observed, sweeping landscapes and the fleetingly ephemeral sky/cloud studies.  His paintings possess an atmosphere of gentle melancholy. Simon's work shows an abiding concern for the master painters of the past; his sky studies owe a debt to Constable, while the landscapes show a keen awareness of the landscape art of the 19C Romantic painters. His work also exhibits a dedication to good craftsmanship. Simon prepares his own stretchers from Canadian cedar and uses the finest canvas and Belgian linens, which he first undercoats with gesso. Simon’s paintings take shape slowly - veils of colour painstakingly applied layer by layer, that develop and build to a harmonious pictorial whole. His paintings, while seemingly representational of actual places, are more often than not ‘imaginative’ scenes built from fragments of memory or a part of a landscape, even a photograph – although they nevertheless have a strong sense of place. His work is a testament to the resurgence of painting in the increasingly divergent and odd world of contemporary art, where sound craftsmanship and good painting has for too long been undervalued.

All works are oil on canvas - Prices range from NZ $2,900 - $10,000 .  All works are signed by the artist and have guarantee of authenticity, and receipt on purchase.

The painting entitled Summit Track  - ( represented above) is difficult to reproduce, (as are Simon's work in general)  - the subltety of colour and paint surface is considerably diminished on the computer screen.  Relative sizes are also misleading.
